Sovata is located in the heart of Transylvania, in the northeastern part of Mureș County, at the center of the Salt Region, at the foot of the Harghita Mountains, at approximately 500 meters above sea level. The town is an excellent starting point for star-shaped tours, being about 60 km from Târgu Mureș (approximately 1 hour by car according to Google Maps), 140 km from Cluj-Napoca (about 2 hours), 50 km from Sighișoara (about 1 hour), and 150 km from Brașov (about 2 hours 30 minutes). The nearest airport is in Târgu Mureș, from where the drive to Sovata takes 1 hour.
The climate is moderate continental, with average summer temperatures of 20-25°C (at the lakes, water temperatures can exceed 30°C), winter averages of -5-0°C, with abundant snow, ideal for winter sports. Annual precipitation is approximately 800 mm, most falling in summer, keeping the lakes' water rich in salt year-round.
Sovata is the realm of saltwater lakes, where nature's unique formations attract visitors. The town's central attraction is Bear Lake, the world's largest heliothermal lake, whose water heats up in layers, reaching up to 35°C in the upper layers during summer, making it an excellent natural bathing spot. The lake's perimeter is 1617 meters, with a maximum depth of 6-7 meters. It is located directly in the center of Sovata, easily accessible on foot.
The area features additional saltwater lakes, such as Nut Lake (Bear Lake's "little brother," 10 minutes on foot from Sovata's center), Green Lake, Red Lake, and Black Lake (all 1-2 km from the center, reachable via walking paths). These lakes have a buoyant effect due to their high salt content and are suitable for therapeutic purposes, such as alleviating rheumatic complaints.
Surrounded by the Harghita Mountains, forests and hiking trails encircle the town, for example, the nearby Bucin Pass (22 km from Sovata, 30 minutes by car), with ski slopes in winter and hiking in summer. Other natural treasures nearby: Red Lake (80 km from Sovata, about 1 hour 30 minutes by car), Bicaz Gorges (89 km, about 1 hour 50 minutes), or Saint Ana Lake (about 80 km, 1 hour 40 minutes), all accessible via day trips.
Sovata boasts a rich cultural heritage, blending Székely traditions with the atmosphere of an old spa town. The old villas in the town's center – such as the Lark Villa, Teleki Villa, Sándor Villa, or Judges' Villa – represent the 19th-20th century hunting lodge style and can be explored on foot (0.5-1 km from the center).
The Roman Catholic Church (in Sovata's center) and the Unitarian Church (in the town's old part, 10 minutes on foot) showcase the local religious heritage. The Ethnographic Museum (2 km from the center, 5 minutes by car) reveals the ethnography and pottery of the Salt Region.
Nearby cultural treasures: Corund pottery fair (25 km from Sovata, about 30 minutes by car), where traditional Székely handicrafts can be discovered; Lupeni, Tamási Áron's birthplace and memorial (35 km, about 45 minutes); or Lăzarea's Lázár Castle (about 65 km, 1 hour 15 minutes), a Renaissance monument.
