Târgu Mureș is a historic city located in the north-central part of Romania, in the heart of Transylvania. Known for its rich cultural heritage and elegant architecture, the city offers a distinct medieval atmosphere, shaped by centuries of history and multicultural influences.
Originally built on the lower terrace of the left bank of the Mureș River, at an altitude of approximately 320 meters above sea level, the city gradually expanded onto the surrounding hills. Today, Târgu Mureș stretches along both banks of the Mureș River, as well as across the Cornești and Niraj Hills.

Historical Background
Archaeological research confirms that the area of present-day Târgu Mureș has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times, up until the early feudal period (9th–14th centuries), from which the first written records of the settlement date.
Owing to its advantageous commercial position, Târgu Mureș developed as a market town, and by the first half of the 16th century, it had become one of Transylvania’s most important centers of craftsmanship and trade.
